Magic
Those with trainable magic are called the
Blessed of Delius and usually end up in service to a Temple. Magic users come
in a variety of forms. Hedge witches are the most common. They are the
slightly blessed and usually end up as the village healer in Llyra’s name. Next
up are the mages. While stronger than a hedge witch, not a one can do more than
transform items within their elemental domain (a rock is a rock is a rock, from
iron to lead to copper). None can make these changes permanent. Above mages in
strength are wizards. Though the aura of magic will remain around an object,
they can “fix” it’s composition within the same domain. Some can even change a
form between domains, but this only lasts as long as the wizard’s
concentration. A sorcerer is a very rare breed, indeed. They are rare enough
that some question remains as to whether they are Blessed or if their magic is
actually a rare form of wild magic that is the manifestation of their will.
According to the Temples, wild magic is not
trainable. Either the wild mage submits to the magic and acts as its channel
into the physical world or he burns himself out (and usually goes stark raving
bonkers) trying to control it. In truth, wild mages can be trained in the use
of their Callings but they pay a price for their control that differs from wild mage
to wild mage. That price is less noticeable for the Called who are also Blessed.
For the most part, wild magic will begin to
manifest within certain situations. The Water Weavers of the Desert Tribes are
one example. A Water Weaver will be easily entranced by water and can locate
the nearest source within an average of 50 miles. The Desert Tribes consider
anything less a survival “knack”. It can manifest as an affinity with a certain
type of beast or with plants or weather or what-have-you.
About 30% of the people born in the Bright
Lands possess some form of trainable magic. About 1% possess a wild or
un-trainable magic strong enough to be called magic (as opposed to just “having
a knack”).
Of those with trainable magic, 10% have the
potential to become mages (or 3% of the general population). Two percent might
become wizards with enough training. Sorcerers run about one every three
million people or 0.000003%. To give an idea of how rare this is, there are at
most one million people living in the kingdom of Corrum at any given time.

As stated before, the Temples are very good at
recruiting the Blessed. In fact, the Universitea Magica es Philoso is the only
organization of Mages outside of Temple control. This causes some friction
between the two groups, but the Universitea mages have done much to ingrate
themselves with the Monarchy of Corrum.
