Quick Note For New Players
Before anything else,
read the
Shaiya Player Ethics Guide.
The biggest problem I hear from new players--especially those who are just
starting to play MMPORPGs like Shaiya or W.o.W.--the biggest problem is that
they don't know what "good" in-game behavior is supposed to be, or how to deal
with fracking idjots who think that hiding behind a digital face releases them
from society's expectation of courtesy or even common sense.
Now, a lot of "good" behavior is common sense, but sometimes there are things
that, while in real life would definitely be courteous, turn out to be ...
unappreciated. For example, player $uper$haiya is sitting when he gets
aggro[1]. Player New2G@me thinks that because $uper$haiya was sitting that he's afk[2] and goes to the rescue.
$uper$haiya starts attacking the mob that aggro'd on him while gripping at
New2G@me about KS'ing[3] and watch what you're hitting, etc.
[1] aggro = monster aggression. The more a toon gets aggro, the
more the monster will focus attacks on that toon.
[2] afk = away from keyboard, chat term
[3] KS = Kill Steal, see the
Aeria Games Forum
Post on Kill Stealing for more details.
Personally, in the instances I've witnessed that match that example, I've found
most of the players in $uper$haiya's role to be out of line for gripping at the
person trying to save their toon. At the same time, the players in New2G@me's
role frequently leap in without looking. Unless the $uper$haiya player is really
dumb, their toon should have enough health to take a few hits while the player
in New2G@me's role waits to see what the $uper$haiya toon does.
Another varient I've seen is that the $uper$haiya toon is running in circles away
from the mob when the New2G@me toon tries to help. If the toon with aggro is
running in circles, that's usually to stay far enough ahead of the mob to keep
their health while they attack the mob. This is a preferred practice with
soloing magic casters, seeing as magic casters have crap for health or physical
attack damage. If another toon is running, wait until they run so far away that
the monster breaks off pursuit and returns to their spawn point before attacking
it.
Almost all of the information on peer conflict resolution is on the Aeria Games
Shaiya Forum.
